La banda surgió en 1980 bajo el nombre de Violation, banda que incluso tocó junto a The Clash. El vocalista no era Ian Astbury en un inicio; se dice que cuando se mudó de casa, descubrió una banda ensayando en su sótano, y el resto es historia. El grupo tocó por primera vez bajo el nombre de Southern Death Cult el 29 de octubre de 1981. Éste es un álbum recopilatorio de sus sencillos, demos y canciones en vivo.
